Welfare War The United States of America... the land of the free and the home of the tax-stricken. The country that is known as "the last superpower in the world" that developed the deadliest weapon on earth, sent the first person to the moon, and was the birthplace of the most powerful man in the world, Bill Gates, has forty million people (which include ten million children) without basic healthcare coverage. (Packet, pg.58) Although this "supernation" boasts of the "American dream," where the poor become rich overnight, the typical American citizen does not have a "super" lifestyle. Based on the average income of Americans, "one in every five U.S. nonelderly households are poor, one in four young households are poor, and over half of all households headed be a lone parent are poor." (Packet, pg.1) Though the United States has tried to mimic the welfare systems of that of Europe, the bureaucratic "red tape" and the conflicts that reside between the legislature and executive branches of the government have hindered the progress towards an effective welfare reform policy. In order to understand the progressions towards refining the wounded welfare system of the United States, one must first know what welfare means. The welfare state is "a state which takes the prime role in ensuring the provision of a minimum standard of living for citizens." (Professor VonDoepp) The two goals of the welfare state is that of 1. security against socio-economic deprivation (especially with the current Capitalistic system which families base their entire lifestyle on the outcome of the economy) Broye 2 2. equality against the still present racial tension and economical barriers that reside in society. Many critics of welfare programs across the world have argued whether the U.S. is really a welfare state because of the limited role played by the government to maintain a minimum standard of living. In Europe's case, just the opposite can be said for their welfare programs. European states such as Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom"provide higher minimum standards of income support than are available in the U.S." (Packet, pg.1) Only seven percent of households in Western Europe have incomes that are below the national median, compared to the United States where the poverty percentile is double. The only positive aspect that the U.S. has to show for their efforts in the current welfare system is the provision of free public education, which is higher than in Europe. (Packet, pg.16) In the U.S. the welfare system before the 1996 bipartisan revision, had far more gaping holes in the "social safety net" than that of the European states. Many skeptics believe that the 1996 Welfare Reform Bill will cause even more harm to the citizens of the U.S. Peter Edelmaun, the former assistant secretary for planning and evaluation at the Department of Health and Human Services, resigned after having worked over 30 years after he read the reformation that was to take place from the Welfare Reform Bill. "The bill will move 20 million people, including 1.1 million children, into poverty, and forcing 11 million families (10 percent of all American family households) under the poverty line which was last estimated at $13,793 for a family of three. (Atlantic Monthly & Packet, pg. 46) While many European states including Sweden, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands provide healthcare Broye 3 centers, suitable housing, health/recreational spas, and regulate wage differentials and offering generous social assistance to the jobless, the United States recently passed a bill to narrow the eligibility for disabled children which will result in the removal of 100,000 to 200,000 of the children who currently receive SSI. Senator Edward Kennedy, who voted against the bill, described it best by saying it was "legislative child abuse." (Atlantic Monthly) Even though the world sees that the United States needs to broaden their "safety net" for its citizens, political strife continues to shorten welfare's reach to those who are in need. The most serious cut to arise from the political blood bath to create the Welfare Reform Bill is the limiting of food stamps to three months out of every three years for unemployed adults under the age of fifty who do not care for any siblings. (Atlantic Monthly) Instead of cutting down the cow (the food provided by the government), why not cut the cash cow that many of our legislative and executive officials enjoy having on a regular basis? Activity assay of mutants compared to those of the WT enzyme A Procedure Week 1: PCR- Primer Design/PCR Mutagenesis Two sterile 0.2 ml PCR tubes were loaded with 5 Â µL PFU buffer, 3 Â µL dNSO, 2.5 Â µL template, 0.5 Â µL PFU, 26.5 Â µL H2O each. Also, one tube was loaded with 5 Â µL Reverse Primer and 5 Â µL Forward Primer Mutant while the other was loaded with 5 Â µL Forward Primer and 5 Â µL Reverse Primer Mutant. 23 cycles of PCR were used to generate the required amount of the DNA sequence of interest. Denaturation, annealing, and elongation represent one cycle of PCR. The first minute of DNA generation was conducted at 950C the second at 500C. The temperature for the following three minutes was raised to 720C with subsequent 10 minutes of elongation at 720C before finally cooling down to 40C affording the crude product. Week 2: PCR Fragment Purification and Restriction Digest A. The crude product produced on the previous stage was loaded into the wells of 0.4 % agarose gel, the first run was conducted. All bends were cut and 330 Â µL QG buffer was added. The mixture was heat till the gel dissolved completely after that transferred to the column and span for 2 minutes. 500 Â µL QG buffer was added and spinning was continued for extra three minutes. 30 Â µL EB buffer was added to dissolve DNA and spinning was continued for 2 minutes. In this way DNA was pulled through. B. To generate the required amount of DNA PCR was conducted. Each of the two sterile 0.2 ml PCR tubes were loaded with 5 Â µL PFU buffer, 5 Â µL Forward Primers, 5 Â µL Reverse Primers, 2.5 Â µLdNTP, 0.5 Â µL pfu, Â µL H2O. Also, one tube was additionally loaded with 5 Â µL AB DNA (Forward mutant) while the other 5 Â µL CD DNA (reverse mutant). On the next day the first tube was loaded with DNA 30 Â µL, Eco R1 buffer 4 Â µL, Eco R1 - 1 Â µL, Hind III- 1 Â µL, H2O- 4 Â µL and the second w ith 4 Â µL vector, Eco R1 buffer 4 Â µL, Eco R1- 1 Â µL, Hind III- 1 Â µL, H2O- 4 Â µL. Both tubes were left at 370C overnight. The area of growth covered car manufacturing, ship building, construction work, electronics and finance related services. The growth pattern of Hyundai was directly linked to the reconstruction programs of South Korea after World War II and the Korean War and also the state led capitalism whose effect could be seen in the polarization of the corporate culture in the country and the increase in many more conglomerates. One of the major companys of Hyundai is the Hyundai Motor Company and is the fifth largest auto maker as per the latest survey. In 1975, the first Korean car Pony was released. Its styling was by Giorgio Giugiaro of ItalDesign and possessed the powertrain technology provided by Japans Mitsubishi Motors. Exports started the following year to Ecuador and soon thereafter to the Benelux countries. The year 1991 saw the company succeed in developing its first proprietary gasoline engine, the four-cylinder Alpha, and transmission. The company began to produce models with its own technology in 1988. The beginning was with the midsize Sonata.In 1996, Hyundai Motors India Limited was started with a production plant in Irrungattukotai near Chennai in India.The year 1998 saw major changes happening in Hyundai as started to change its image in an attempt to establish itself as a world class brand. Chung Ju Yung transferred the reigns of Hyundai Motor to his son, Chung Mong Koo, this was in 1999. Hyundais parent company, Hyundai Motor Group, invested heavily. This investment was in quality, design, manufacturing, and future research of its vehicles. The addition of the 10-year or 100,000-mile warranty for cars sold in the United States showed an aggressive marketing related campaign.In 2004 a survey by JD Power and Associates Hy undai was ranked second in terms of initial quality. Currently, Hyundai is one of the top 100 most valuable brands worldwide. Hyundai has also been one of the official sponsors of the FIFA World Cup ever since 2002. Organization Culture and Structure The Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) was established under the leadership of Ju Young Chung backed by a unified and centralized management structure. He exercised the authoritarian style of leadership. The decision making process was carried out by the Chung family. The positive out of this was that such an ownership and structure gave Hyundai Motor Company the power to pursue the external agents and develop long term relationship with them. This was seen when Hyundai Motor Company entered into an alliance with Ford. The chairman refused to transfer his authority to Ford in any way (Russell, 2007, pp.57). The entire financial and personnel support was from HMCs mother company, the Hyundai Engineering Construction Company. This gave him the edge as it was also owned and managed by Ju Young Chung, and thus he could steer HMC in any way. An employee who worked with HMC from the year 1985 to 1996 said that not all executives are affiliated with the Chung family. He stated that they had a few talented professional managers. But the only this was that they never objected to any directions given by the chairman. To be more precise it was next to impossible to present any opinions with regard to anything different from that of Chungs. Anyone who disagreed or even said a word against Chungs decisions would and should be ready to be fired the very next day. He even went on to say that Hyundais entry to U.S. market was Chairman Chungs personal ambition leading the way. But in retrospect he also agreed that without Chungs drive, Hyundais entry into the U.S. market would have been delayed until and unless its technology was comparable to the Japanese or European automakers. Chungs mode of bulldozer leadership was effective and was clearly seen also with Hyundais success. After successfully leading Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) in order to gain entry in the North American market, Ju Young Chung handed over the reigns of the Hyundai group and Hyundai Motor Company to his younger brother, Se Young Chung. This was in the year 1987. The new leadership of HMC followed a very different organizational culture if compared to Ju Young Chungs time. The chairman made attempts to inspire HMC with the new thought process. This was harmonious human relations, autonomous management, responsibility management, and equal opportunity. Thus it drove out the previous emperor leadership concept by the delegation of responsibility as well as authority to the various professionals employed by the organization. This change led to a change in focus with regard to strategy. 1987-1988 Se Young Chung redesigned the HMC and the main aim was to improve the production efficiency which was done by shuffling or merging the various job related functions. The most noticed change in the o rganization chart was the conversion from a functional organization to a divisional organization. This aimed at providing efficient control and evaluation, developed motivation of the management, improved the ability to cope with market diversification and reduction of the cost. The democratization of Hyundai was affected by the political democratization movements in Korean society in the late 80s. This led to a series of labor versus management disputes. HMC was definitely not an exception. In 1996, Se Young Chung passed on his leadership to his son, Mong Kyu Chung. He inherited not only got the title but inherited the leadership style of his father. This allowed HMC to have a smooth transition with very little turmoil. He had a broader vision. He set up a brand new vision which was aimed at a position in the world top-10 automaker ranking in the 21st century and this was possible by occupying four percent of the world auto market. Thus, the primary strategic focus was placed on im proving of image of the brand and consumer satisfaction. This would be carried out via more intense product quality movement, value management, and market globalization. Mong Kyu Chung was also responsible for introducing the team system into the organization, along with more importance to compensation which was performance based. The 1997 East Asian crisis dealt a heavy blow to all the Korean conglomerates. In 1997 and 1998 half of the top 30 of them, including Daewoo, went into bankrupt. But he didn’t say a word after the manipulation thi ng. But it looks like he married his daughter with other powerful men like him and they both could handle good business together. You make sure to be in bed early as you want to feel rested, be alert and look good the next day†¦ but, to your disappointment, you cannot fall asleep. You toss and turn for an hour, finally you get up to walk around, drink something†¦ by then you are so worked up about not being able to sleep that your sleep is delayed even more. Or for many of us it would be more accurate not to imagine but remember! Insomnia.The very word can make you fidgety. You may feel better knowing that 30% of the population suffers from insomnia. A national sleep poll shows that 60% of people have driven while sleepy and 35% admit to having fallen asleep at the wheel in the past year. Statistics also show that US industry loses about $150 billion each year because of sleep deprived workers. So the next time you lay awake in bed at 2 AM, certain that you are the only person in the world who isn't sound asleep, you now know that you've got plenty of company. What IS insomnia?Insomnia is the failure to get enough sleep to feel rested and refreshed. It could be caused by something as simple as drinking too much caffeine during the day or being anxious about many responsibilities. In some cases it could be a more complex medical condition. Let's talk about the symptoms * Difficulty falling asleep despite being tired * Waking up frequently during the night * Waking up too early in the morning * Difficulty concentrating during the day The good news is that you could cure most cases on your own, by making simple changes.So here's what you gotta do: We've all heard of counting sheep†¦ but really, has that worked for anyone or just kept them up longer? Some more tips on getting a good night's sleep: Stick to the same sleep schedule every day. Studies show that people who sleep in on weekends disturb their biological clock, thereby causing insomnia. Avoid stressful situations before bedtime.Having an argument right before you go to bed will not result in restful sleep. Stop drinking caffeinated drinks a good few hours before bed. Your daily Starbucks habit may be affecting your sleep more than you realize. Just like you prepare your body for sleep, you mus t prepare your brain as well. Our brains produce a hormone, melatonin that helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Light affects how much melatonin your body produces, not enough natural light during the day can make your brain feel sleepy†¦. o make sure to spend enough time outdoors every day. And most importantly, don't underestimate the affect your thinking will have. Don't let sleep – or the lack of it – invade your thoughts. You may dread going to sleep because you know that you’re going to toss and turn for hours. I was a student who loved sports and aviation during my high school level and in 1981 I had honors in football and track after a hard work of practice and when my period as high school student was over I graduated with in the top of the class with a percentage of 10% and later on I joined the air force national guard in the year 1983 and served as a aerospace firefighter just to be close to those fighter jets. Back then there wasn’t flight schools as you have now for high school graduates to go to straight from high school,you had to have a degree and get in the air force to learn to fly. I attended Stphen F. Austin State University for two semesters,didn’t do for good,cause I didn’t take it very serious at the time. I currently work for a fbo in a position that has low pay but had to continue because I wanted to be next to the airplanes. My aviation goals are to be a professional pilot for mesa airlines and my longterm goal is to be a captain for a major airlines flying 737 and 757 if possible. My short term educational goal is a associate degree in applied sciences in aviation technology and my long term goal would to get a bachelors in the same course.. I am a person who has been interested in aviationfor many years since playing is part of my hobby and I joined virtual airlines and have used flight simulator by microsoft for many years and logging in over 4000 hours.other hobbies I enjoy. included outdoor games like fishing and boating. Another hobbies which is very important to me is reading and writing poetry, this I do at my free time to express my emotions on paper. I am also involved in helping the needy and attending church where I regularly volunteer to help needy children. At the church also is where I am a big brother and work as a mentor. My interests in aviation lead me to visit San Juan College so as to inquire on their provision of associate degree program and the cost of their education. I found out that I was in great need of up to 35000 since the program costs 97000 and due to the nature of my job which is low thus I cannot be in a position to pay for my education. During this time of inquiry I was booked for an interview on 15th of 2008 where I qualified and has been accepted in the school and in its flight programs. For this reason I would like to request if I can be given a scholarship so as to pursue my career which for a long time I have dreamt of. This is being an instructor in the line of aviation because teaching has also been my concern in life interest due to the fact that I have always wanted to teach and give a best short to help learners. My teaching on aviation has been for places in higher institutions like university setting. I developed this interest because I was inspired by one lecturer who devoted his life to aviation and during his teachings people could understand every detail of his instructions.
